Within my small group of friends and coworkers, there have been three deaths in our families and two major automobile accidents. Today, the Ladies of Literature had their annual meeting to toast the new year and pick our books for 2012. One of our members said that 2012 had to get better from here. Another member predicted that we just might look back on 2011 as a really good year once we saw what ...Continue reading » Together We Can Do More

And I made good on my resolve to, among other things, go for a looong walk around the block. And I very much ENJOYED the fact that I was indeed doing what I said I would. After letting my daily walk dwindle down to a maybe-once-a-week-walk, I’m back at it and getting my steps in every morning.

So here I am – on the other side of failure. Yes, I have an entire 3 days under my belt — YAY. The question of the day is: How do I keep that “streak” going??? ...Continue reading » Be Good to Yourself – WALK!

It seemed as if I spent each day running from deadline to deadline. Finally, after all this time, I’ve started to develop a rhythm to my life during the work week. Yeah, I know – the real question is: Who’s eating out anymore?

We often bemoan the “outsourcing” of jobs to second or third world countries and rarely do we look to them for effective operational models. We both have to come up with topics to write about. While neither of us could probably tell you exactly how we do it, it seems to be true, at least for me, that it has something to do with showing up.

I’m sure you’ve heard that 80% of success in life is showing up. And so it is with writing.

Back in the beginning of the self-esteem movement, many proponents recommended that you repeat an affirmation to help you improve your self-esteem. I grab a stack of books off the shelves, buy a cup of coffee at their café and rent the table while I go through the stack to see if there’s something I want. Usually, I find that I want most of what I’ve found, so I make a list to read over time. Then, sometime in the future, one at a time, I get the books I listed. By the time I get back to the book I often don’t remember why I ...Continue reading » Blooming Where You’re Planted

This is all heart-warming and reassuring. Until you realize that no one ever tells you anything about the second step.”

Lately that seems very true to me. Often as we are setting out for a new destination, we plan our journey; but like a battle, the plan doesn’t survive the first encounter with reality.

When I first started working in Corporate America, I had two reactions: one – I couldn’t believe that I had actually set a goal and achieved it and; two – I couldn’t understand why I was so depressed.

Sure, I expected that I would graduate from college – after all, I’d graduated from grammar school and high school. College wasn’t that different. What I never really believed would happen is ...Continue reading » Where To From Here??

Often success is the result of us continuing in the face of small successes or no successes until we reach our goal. It’s not about how “smart” we are. It’s not about who we know. It’s about the ability to be flexibly stubborn in pursuit of our dream.

Stubborn. You probably don’t think of stubbornness as being a positive quality. Certainly when your two year old is stomping her foot at you in an attempt to get what she wants, it isn’t. Most of us want to be rich or skinny or talented or married or divorced… NOW! Human nature being what it is we don’t like to wait for anything. We know that to lose weight healthily, we need to do it over time, gradually increasing our level of fitness and increasing the healthiness of the foods we eat. But, HECK, now that we’ve made the decision, we want the effect to be as close to instantaneous as possible. When it isn’t, we quickly get discouraged.
Some Things Take Time

As Albert Einstein said, “The only reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once.” The key to making time work for you is to have a vision that is so strong that it pulls you towards it every day.
