Are you getting stressed out with all the holiday falderal? Want to feel better? Then do a little good every day… it’s easier than you think.

For somehow, not only at Christmas, but all the long year through, the joy that you give to others is the joy that comes back to you.

— John Greenleaf Whittier

Has holiday busyness hijacked your Christmas spirit?  Are you feeling stressed instead of jolly, exhausted instead of joyful?  Ready to throw in the towel?  Before you do, consider this instead: Do a little good every day.  Yes, I’m really suggesting that you wedge another To-Do into your already-maxed-out day!  Why?  Because when we’re Continue reading » The Best Way to Relieve Holiday Stress? LIFE SHOULD NEVER FEEL SMALL.

Don’t be yourself, be someone a little nicer.

One of the things that Ellie and I do to improve and expand this blog is to wander (others surf, we wander) the internet searching for people and ideas that we can introduce to you. This weekend, I found an article with a different view of the “small stuff” of life. The author is a wife, mother, blogger and psychology student. She was reflecting on her weekend and the oft quoted, “Rule number one is, don’t sweat the Continue reading » Lost in the Small Stuff

How do YOU spell relief?

For fast acting relief, try slowing down.

— Lily Tomlin

Call me gobsmacked – taken unawares and feeling wonder – at some research I’ve stumbled upon in my wanderings through the internet.  It left me asking the question: Are you sure about that?  But I guess it all comes down to finding a bit of relief from some surprising sources.

Lonely?  Try a Little TV

Really??? Yeah, really.  A report in ScientificAmerican.com reports:

New psychological research suggests that loneliness can be alleviated by simply turning on your favorite TV show. In the same way that a snack can satiate hunger in lieu of a meal, it seems that watching favorite TV shows can provide the experience of belonging without a true interpersonal interaction.

I know, I know.  In fact, everyone knows (don’t we?): we spend too much time with our TV programs, Facebook, Tweets, Gameboys, what-have-you’s.  But, in the short run, in a pinch, Continue reading » Are You Sure About That?

What’s the Big Deal about Small Stuff?

I can think of three ways that small stuff is a big deal, how about you?

In last week’s post, Lost in the Small Stuff, PattiAnn acknowledged the deep truth of this statement:

Life is lived mostly in the small stuff.

Cyndi

Her post struck a chord with me and I’m compelled to play it out for you this week.

Don’t Sweat (Some) Small Stuff

Rather than allowing hurts and setbacks to deter us, it’s certainly true that we do well to remember Richard Carlson’s mantra, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”  And also his corollary, “It’s all small stuff.”   We need to let go of those things that hurt and hold us back; we need to find a way to move on because dwelling on the negative just drags us down. Carlton’s mantra can help in the process. (And thanks to one of our readers, Innes, for reminding me about the importance of this now-a-cliché!)

But Do Sweat These!

But, oh how I miss the small stuff of my life-shared-with-my-late-husband.  (There’s soooooooooo much irony in that “term’ – you see, I was always the late one; he was always the ON-TIME one.)  My days are filled with nostalgic reminders of small stuff moments:

  • At church the man in front of me put his hand on his wife’s shoulder… and I remembered how good that gentle touch felt.  Such a small, simple, loving gesture.  I really miss the casual hand-holding while we walked together… Small stuff we did so easily and mindlessly.  When you feel the urge to touch family in comfort and love, do.  It matters. Take a short break and consider the following:

“It is the personal thoughtfulness, the warm human awareness, the reaching out of the self to one’s fellow man that makes giving worthy of the Christmas spirit.”
