Feeling a bit down? Help yourself to some ordinary pleasures and savor them!
I’ve had my share of necessary losses,
Of dreams I know no longer can come true.
I’m done now with the whys and the becauses.
It’s time to make things good, not just make do.
It’s time to stop complaining and pursue
The pleasures of an ordinary life.
Recently I heard a snatch of a lively song that tickled my fancy… and fortunately, I was able to capture the artist and song title. Today I found it on Youtube.com and it set my feet to tapping, got me laughing out loud and dancing a jig in my head. Listen for yourself: Stuck Like Glue by Sugarland. It’s hard to hold on to a bad mood while listening to that tune…
And, once again, a simple pleasure rescues my psyche from the doldrums… Must remember – lively music helps my mood. Here’s another one that lights up the happy in me by the Zac Brown Band, Lil Bit of Chicken Fried:
It’s the simple things in life that mean the most
Not where you live or what you drive or the price tag on your clothes
There’s no dollar sign on a piece of mind this I’ve come to know.

How do you live inside hope?
…if you’re lucky, you’ll find a way to live inside hope, running down its hallways touching the walls on both sides.
— Barbara Kingsolver
Puts me in mind of the time I learned to dance on a moving log…
Hope arouses a passion for the possible.
— William Sloan Coffin
There I was, arms flailing in a desperate attempt to stay upright on the suspended rough hewn pine log… consumed with the fear of falling… ready to give up almost before I’d begun… Continue reading » Touching the Walls on Both Sides

Self-help is the best help.
— Polish Proverb
There are many bloggers and authors out there who make fun of the self-help industry and I certainly understand their point of view. If nothing else, the question is always raised, “if self-help authors/speakers are so good, why do we keep needing to read/hear from more of them?” I think I’ve figured out the answer. They believe that we can succeed more than we do.
For several weeks now, I’ve been listening to a free series of speakers provided by an organization called “Unlimited Wealth.” Some of the speakers have been a rehash of the same ol’ stuff I’ve heard a million times before, but some of them have brought new ideas to the table. The price for all of this is that in the middle and at the end of every interview, there is a sales pitch. The speaker is there to promote their business and they get their shot each time. Even so, there have been some really good Continue reading » How to Help Yourself

This is an invitation – an invitation to join a conversation about making the most out of life no matter what it throws at us. Ellie and I have been doing a lot of talking and we’d really like to hear from you. Please, join the conversation.
I met a friend for dinner over the weekend. We used to work together and we’ve been friends for a very long time. Not wanting to be pushy, I waited until the end of dinner to ask her if she’d had a chance to go out and look at our new blog. She said that she had, but that she didn’t know quite what to “do” with it. Since she isn’t the first one to express this sentiment, I thought I’d take a stab at what you “do” with a blog.
