Have you ever been tempted to spiff-up your perfectly normal life in order to impress OPs (Other People) in your life?

High school – forget it. Jocks became jocks, cheerleaders became cheerleaders. We became us. I like us.

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I’d vacationed with two of my high school buddies.  Now we’re making plans for another staycation at one of their homes so we can attend our high school class reunion – it’s one of those milestones.  And naturally we’re contemplating whether or not we really want to Continue reading » Time to Spiff Up That Normal Life?

Figuring Out How to Make Things Better

A fierce unrest seethes at the core, of all existing things: it was the eager wish to soar, that gave the gods their wings.

— Don Marquis

Over and over again, in the self-help literature, you read, “It’s all a matter of how you look at it.”  In other words, you can choose a viewpoint which could help you feel better.

While this may be good advice on the surface, it may be ignoring an underlying problem.  If over a long period of time you are finding it hard to accept your life as it is, it’s quite possible that Continue reading » Figuring Out How to Make Things Better

Waking Up to Possibilities

When you woke up this morning what did you most look forward to doing?

“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what’s the first thing you say to yourself?”

“What’s for breakfast?” said Pooh.

…happiness gives us the energy which is the basis of health.

— Henri Frédéric Amiel

During these early days of Spring, 2010, I’m struggling to find answers to questions I can’t even get articulated.  And I’ve decided to be patient as I grope for those questions/answers – so, although I’m neither young nor poet, I’m taking to heart Rainier Maria Rilke’s advice when he wrote: Continue reading » Wishing You G’day!

A Fine Line – Caring for Elder Bodies

Dear Caregivers —

Whatever challenges you face in caring for your loved ones today, know that with the passage of time these challenges will change. The current issues will fade, and there will be a new set of challenges awaiting you to solve…or at best, survive.  When you’re feeling like you can no longer persevere, remember you are warriors and time and patience are your allies.  Hang in there!

As a child, I was raised with a sense of paranoia about the unknown that continues to affect me to this day.  Because I am the eldest and also the one who was “most responsible” as a child, I assumed that I would be the one to take care of my parents as they aged.

We have a long history of taking care of elder bodies in the family.  Although my maternal grandparents died relatively young, their siblings lived into their eighties and nineties and my parents both shouldered the responsibility of taking care of them.  For these folks, that meant Continue reading » A Fine Line – Caring for Elder Bodies
