Merri-Wanna Time!

Bet you can’t eat just one…

Strength is the ability to break a chocolate bar into four pieces with your bare hands – and then eat just one of those pieces.

— Judith Viorst

First off – let me tell you a secret about PattiAnn: She can make a chocolate bar last for days!  Truly!  For many of the rest of us, just one taste of a chocolate bar or a french fry sends us into a frenzy of “more, I want more… I’m merry and I-wanna-eat-more…” or as I’ve paraphrased: Merri-Wanna Time!

According to new research, “fatty foods may cause our bodies to Continue reading » Merri-Wanna Time!

Nothing helps a bad mood like spreading it around.

— Bill Watterson
author of Calvin and Hobbes

As part of the “new me” which will be arriving in 2011, I followed Martha Beck’s advice (via Ellie) about goal setting and I had one of those “Aha!” moments.  The idea of using adjectives to describe who I wanted to be had never occurred to me before, but once I read the article, it seemed so obvious.  How could I have missed it?  I don’t know, but I definitely did.

After my last post about creativity, I’m a little gun shy about just using what Beck had put in her article, but I liked her adjectives.  They resonated for me.  So, I’ve committed to putting myself on a path to Continue reading » How to Make Your Mood Swing

Anxiety is the rust of life, destroying its brightness and weakening its power.

Recently, I’ve been reading another book about how our brains work.  In Dr. Daniel Amen’s book Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, he describes the chemical interactions that occur as a result of our thoughts.  Putting these various pieces of research together, I have learned that I can affect how my mind behaves and I can create an outlook that serves me. With that comes greater freedom from anxiety and depression and that makes it worth working at understanding the science, and developing the skills that conform with the research.

In some of my most recent posts, I’ve written about the effect of thoughts on the shape and structure of our brain.  Repetitive thoughts or actions become imprinted in our brains and the more repetitive they are the deeper the imprint.  The deeper the imprint, the harder it is to change them.

With the addition of Dr. Amen’s research, we start to understand how Continue reading » Get Rid of the ANTS

Wouldn’t It Be Nice If…

GO AWAY!

In the past several days I’ve been struggling with a mood problem. I really want to be in a good mood, and sometimes I actually achieve one for a short time, but then my negativism takes over again and I slump over in, if not despair, then despondency.

With all the writing that Ellie and I have been doing on choosing your reality, it feels worse because, after all, if I’m going to write about this stuff, I should be able to manage myself better.

Recently, I have been listening to Ask and It Is Given. The idea behind this book is that like the physical laws of the universe, for such things as gravity, quarks, speed of sound, light speed, there are principles that govern how our emotional/spiritual lives work.
