Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it.

— Helen Keller

Ellie and I have written it before, and I’ll write it again… ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING!  Admittedly, this isn’t new news.  Ellie and I have been beating this drum since we started this blog, but today, I met the living proof of this truism.

I noticed this lady because of how happy she seems to be, she smiles all the time, AND because she called me by name when we’d never been introduced.  (It turned out that in addition to her other responsibilities, she also makes the security badges and knew my name from the badge.)

To be honest, I don’t smile all the time.  For various reasons, I’ve been irritable lately.  As I walk into work, I have to remind myself to Continue reading » Exhaustion – Physical, Mental or Spiritual – is Harmful to Your Attitude

An Unpleasant Surprise

Raise yourself up after a fall.

— St. Francis de Sales

I have a friend whose grandson returned from Iraq over a year ago.  He had seen some awful things over there, probably more than any of us can even imagine, and he had held his best friend in his arms as he died.  Like many of our returning veterans, he tried to keep life the way it had been before he went to Iraq.  It just wasn’t possible.  After a short period of time, it became obvious that he was struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

After all that we’ve asked of our service people, when they return we expect them to be able to reintegrate into society and be able to manage their lives as if nothing changed.  With any injury or illness, if the soldier is conscious, he is expected to Continue reading » An Unpleasant Surprise

How do you get back up on the horse?

I’d like to be “back in the saddle again” for the long haul… I’d like to see myself moving toward a future that’s active and fit… But I keep falling off the horse.

When you’re young and you fall off a horse, you may break something.  When you’re my age, you splatter.

— Roy Rogers

Yep, that would be me, splattering my fitness objectives all over my good intentions!

According to ThisDayInQuotes.com, “back in the saddle again” means: …a return to normal activities or duties.  And, yes, there’s the hitch – try as I might I just can’t seem to make exercise and eating-right part of my normal activities or duties.

Some people tell me that they actually miss it when they neglect their normal exercise routine… they tell me that exercising releases happy endorphins and after a while their body starts to crave those endorphins so much that a day without exercise is punishment.

But for me the punishment is the getting up and out and into it.  And although I enjoy my Zumba class (currently on hiatus between sessions), I still spend most of my time wishing it Continue reading » Back in the Saddle

Too much bad stress, too often can make you sick.  How do you relieve tension and anxiety?

Don’t let your mind bully your body into believing it must carry the burden of its worries.

— Astrid Alauda

With apologies to Paul Simon’s 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, take a listen and let his music inspire your creative release of whatever tensions plague you.  Of course, the problem isn’t all inside your head – bad stress permeates your body, your heart and your soul… and it’s as damaging as can be.  Shaking off your stress is well worth the struggle.

Stress is the trash of modern life – we all generate it but if you don’t dispose of it properly, it will pile up and overtake your life.

— Terri Guillemets

There Must Be 50 Ways to Shake Off Your Stress

  1. Just slip out the back, Jack.
  2. Make a new plan, Stan.
  3. Bake some bread – beat that dough into submission!
  4. Learn to forgive. Really, do it, forgiveness matters!
  5. Make funny faces to a mirror.
  6. Yawn on purpose.  Do it again.
  7. Remove yourself from the situation. (Hop on the bus, Gus.)
  8. Turn on a radio talk show, talk back or mimic the commentators.
  9. Help someone who needs help.
  10. Take off your shoes and soak your feet. Continue reading » 50 Ways to Shake Off Your Stress
