How do your pets enrich your life? I’ve been looking for a reason to use all these cute animal pictures that I’ve come across while searching for just the right photo for today’s post. At last I’ve found it. Telling you how wonderful it is to have pets. If you are not a pet owner, the first thing you must understand is that for those of us without human children, our pets are our kids. The second thing you will need to accept is that I’m not exaggerating. My animals are my babies… maybe not the fish, but the four-legged ones are. This past weekend was the 75th anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous, the group that helps others like themselves by “having one drunk talk to another” and by taking one day at a time. The secret to their success is that they know that little changes come from doing something that we didn’t used to do, every day. Over time the little changes become big changes and we’ve accomplished something that we never knew we could. In this week’s LA Times, a recovering alcoholic told his story. In the article, Chas relates how he really, really didn’t want to go to his first AA meeting. He had seen AA help his father, his uncle, and his three brothers, but he had lots of reasons it wouldn’t work for him. A friend got him to go to a meeting anyway. Last Wednesday, my friend, Teri, was run over by a car – literally. It was, in the classic definition of the word, an accident. The driver and the victim knew each other. They live just down the street from each other. Part of the cause of the accident was assuming and the other part was hurry. The car was parked in the driveway. Teri saw that her neighbor was in the car, the engine was on and she saw the driver check behind her. Teri assumed that the driver saw her and that the driver wouldn’t pull out quickly, so she walked behind the car. The driver was in a hurry. Today, while I was out walking the dog, I ran into an occasional dog acquaintance. When I first met her, she was working out of her home and had a relatively flexible schedule. I would see her a couple of mornings a week. Then she disappeared. Actually, she had transitioned into a “corporate job” and was walking her dogs at 5:30 in the morning, so from my point of view, she had disappeared. About a month ago, she took a vacation day, and I saw her and the dogs again. We talked for a while and I told her about BouncebackCafe.com (BBC). When I was a kid, many long years ago, I didn’t have very many friends. I went to the Catholic school attached to our parish church, but the church was far enough away that we had a local chapel where the families in our area attended Mass. So, if I wanted to participate in school activities, I had to be dropped off and picked up. My parents were overprotective, my father having been scarred for life by the Lindbergh kidnapping. Seriously, it was an awful incident, but we didn’t have any money and certainly no fame.
