Habits are stronger than reason.

— George Santayan

Do you ever feel like you’re an imposter and someday everyone will figure it out?  I know I do.

For most of my adult life I’ve wanted to change my beliefs.  You see, I tend to believe some very disempowering stuff about myself – not at a conscious level, you understand, but at a subconscious level.  Because I struggle every day to overcome what I “know” is true about myself, when I succeed, it’s in spite of myself.

Like many people, I believe that if you all knew how much I struggle to:

  • write a post
  • lose weight
  • maintain a positive attitude
  • you name it

– you would think I was an imposter.  Some of you probably identify with that belief.  On some level, I know that you aren’t going to Continue reading » Habitual Beliefs Rule (You)

What Are You Thinking?

What are you thinking?

In marketing, there is a saying, “Perception is reality.”  This saying explains the challenge that companies or politicians face when dealing with the public’s view of them.  It is why they spend so much on public relations.  No matter what a politician or a company does, if they lose the PR war, they lose.

The same can be said for us.  Most of us believe that what we feel is “true.”  Emotions can make or break our day.  If we “feel” that things are hopeless, then, for us, they are.  This raises an interesting issue.  How would you be feeling right now if you were an engineer working on capping the rig in the Gulf of Mexico?  If there’s anyone saying anything positive about these people who are trying to solve the problem, it’s probably Continue reading » What Are You Thinking?

If you put yourself in a position where you have to stretch outside your comfort zone, then you are forced to expand your consciousness.

— Les Brown

I am not the only crazy person in my circle of friends.  Several of us are learning how to trade stocks and options.

One of my trading friends, Susan, was just kicked out of a leading well-known brokerage firm because her account had been hacked.  The hack was part of a “pump and dump” scam.  The crooks buy a lot of a stock at a low price.  Having cornered the market on a bunch of ABC Company stock, they then go out and buy a bunch more using other people’s accounts which they’ve hacked (the pump).  When they have run up the price of ABC Company’s stock, they sell their own shares and then dump the shares that they bought using the hacked accounts.  The end result is that they’ve manipulated the stock price and made a bunch of money over a short time-frame.

None of this is legal, nor is it my friend’s fault.  The brokerage firm reset her account to remove the effects of the “pump and dump.”  Shortly after all had settled down, they asked Susan to move her money elsewhere, claiming Continue reading » Just Ask

Feeling Good is Closer Than You Think

Forget love, I’d rather fall in chocolate.

It seems that in my life, these last few weeks have had a theme to them.  We are not our feelings!  It seems strange to say, but it is true.

Just like Ellie said in yesterday’s post, “It’s amazingly easy to think that my view of the world is the only view – that my fishbowl IS reality, that my ‘story’ is THE story.”  It is also amazingly easy to think that my feelings are me, that they reflect reality.  My feelings are my reaction to my “story” in this moment.

Our Common Myth

Because feelings and story reinforce each other, we have a tendency to get caught up in what we’re feeling.  If we “feel good” then all must be Continue reading » Feeling Good is Closer Than You Think
