Skepticism is the beginning of faith.

— Oscar Wilde

When I was a kid in catechism class, I was taught that faith was a gift from God.  You either got the gift or you didn’t.  It was sort of like the taunt we all heard some version of when we were kids – “Where were you when the brains/good looks/talent/coordination were passed out?”  If you were behind the door, you were out of luck.

If you were raised in a religious tradition, there was probably some point when you came face to face with doubt.  For me, it was Philosophy 101 freshman year of college.  It was in that class that I was exposed to Continue reading » Faith

A Teacher Will Appear…

I’m finding teachers in places I go and places I’ve been. What about you – where are your teachers appearing. And what are you ready to learn these days?? Share?

I guess I subscribe to the saying that when you are ready to learn a teacher will appear.

So there I was Sunday ruminating (during Church no less) that I used to be comfortably and securely an “I inside a We” and now must be a “me, myself and I” again – someone I’ve not been for forty-seven years – not since I first started dating my husband.  (Yeah, looking back it was pretty much love at first sight – scary huh?)  That’s not to say I felt subsumed by the partnership.  No, it was more of a “we’ve got each other’s back” inner knowledge that sustained.  We each were our own persons within our “we-us” and me, I’ve always been pretty darn independent and assertive.  Or so those near and dear tell me.  They tease that you don’t want to cross Ellie – no you don’t.

Control – Most of us like to think we have it. If you’ve been paying attention to the economy lately, you know just what an illusion control is. People who have worked hard their whole lives are in danger of losing their jobs, their savings, their retirement or all of the above. There is a deep feeling of anger in the general population. Why??? Because this latest downturn has affected all of us and we want to blame someone.

We Got the News…

LoopsNED – “no evidence of disease” is what we expected to hear after the latest, now routine round of tests. Instead, we heard, “it appears there is disease here.” Esophageal cancer is hard to beat down but we thought my husband’s surgery and two chemotherapy regimens, completed a year ago, had beat it down. It had. For a short while. But it is back.

We weren’t expecting this news. And it knocked us for a loop. (Ya think??) We’re still in a state of shock, trying to make sense out of what appears to be a death sentence. But so it was, back in the Fall of 2007, and he managed to beat it down then. And even though last year’s chemo threw him in the hospital for eleven days, he’s signed-on for doing chemo again. That takes guts, let me tell you!

Take a short break and consider the following:
