It’s like you asked me about the depression thing: you grope towards an understanding of whatever it is you’re going through, and it’s not personal, there are forces in play around you, and you seek to understand them and that way you can go on.
— Bob Geldof
Depression – whenever you encounter it – is inconvenient, sometimes painful and can be life changing. There are many kinds of depression:
Situational: a major change, expected or unexpected, throws you for a loop and until you get your feet back under you, there’s discomfort, anxiety, uncertainty, and lots of blue days.
Chronic: like any chronic illness, this form of depression is Continue reading » Sucking on Lemons

Keeping house is like stringing beads with no knot at the end of the string.

Every day brings its challenges. Some days bring little ones and some days big ones. As we move through life we deal with whatever challenges come our way and keep moving, often so quickly that we hardly notice or recognize the effect on us. This isn’t bad but sometimes we gradually slow down. The friction of getting through each day brings Continue reading » Untying the Knots in Our Lives

The difference between an itch and an allergy is about one hundred bucks.

It is an old truism that people who struggle with addiction must “hit bottom” before they can truly choose to make the hard choice to be “sober.” For people who are part of the “Anonymous” community (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, etc.) this is considered part of the process. I don’t know if they’ve truly hit bottom but at some point, something in them decides that they’ve had enough. For each and every person who makes that choice, it’s a significant moment when Continue reading » Hitting Bottom

Labels are devices for saving the talkative person from thinking.

Labels are tricky things. Sometimes we don’t even know the label that we have for ourselves until something brings it to our attention.
Over the years, one of the things I’ve learned about myself is that I’m persistent. When I put it that way, it’s a good thing. If someone calls me stubborn, it’s an insult. I’m persistent without being stubborn!?? How do I do that?
From a very young age, we are labeled. Our parents tell their friends – and us – that we’re “well-behaved” or “a challenge” or “into everything” or “curious.” Even if we don’t know the words, we know the tone of voice and we adopt the Continue reading » Creating the Labels We Want

How’s your posture? What does it tell about you?
This is my “depressed stance.” When you’re depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand. The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you’ll start to feel better. If you’re going to get any joy out of being depressed, you’ve got to stand like this.
— Charlie Brown
Can’t you just hear your Mother saying “Stand up straight! Shoulders back! Point your toes out.” Well, maybe your Mom didn’t demand that last one… my Mom decided early on that her little ones were Continue reading » My Depressed Stance
