Times are tough. We’re living in the time of the barbell economy – lots of rich people, lots of poor people and some middle class in between. As time passes, some of the middle class are becoming poor.
Denial exists for a reason. It protects us from what we aren’t ready to see. It tells us that this isn’t where we were supposed to be. It’s not fair!!! We had been marching towards an affluent retirement and instead we’re looking at working longer. Are you having fun yet?

The only thing that I am certain of is that we are surrounded by uncertainty. We collect stories of terrible things that have happened to people and then we try our best to protect ourselves from these horrors by engineering our lives to avoid them. That’s the phenomenon that occurs with the news broadcasts. We say that we want stories that reflect the positive in our world and the good in people, but we don’t really react to these stories as we do to stories of bad luck, or murder and mayhem.

How will you adapt to the “new normal”?
When Ellie wrote about putting on someone else’s glasses in The Road Ahead, I really identified with it. My mother had awful eyesight and I inherited her severe myopia and astigmatism. One of the favorite things, for those of us who were visually challenged, to do was to put on each others’ glasses to see who was the blindest of us all. Adults would warn us that we would ruin our eyes but most of us felt that they couldn’t get much worse anyway, so we exchanged glasses off and on for years.
