As I continue with my Lenten practice of listening to 15 minutes of a book on spiritual development every day, I came across an interesting idea. John Ortberg in The Life You’ve Always Wanted points out that it is a serious responsibility that we find joy in life. Although I’ve heard this before – I have listened to this book – for some reason, I didn’t notice it when I listened before.

Not Yet…
Why do we put off using special gifts we’ve been given? We packrat them away in drawers and cupboards, or display them on shelves to simply be admired but not touched or used. I think of:
- The really fine watercolor paper I’m saving for my best effort. (And how do you know when you begin an art project whether it will end up an “under the bed” or a “mat & frame” work of art??)
- The Sweet Pea seeds I’ve not planted because I don’t have the exact “best” place for them
- The “good china” lovingly packed in a top cupboard
- The fancy perfume for “special occasions”
- The gorgeous, home-grown tomatoes and squash we accidentally froze in the garage refrigerator while waiting for a propitious moment to serve them
- The lotions and potions that seem too precious to “waste” on just my everyday arms and legs and face…
