Learning to Dance in the Rain

Still waiting for all this rain to stop? Perhaps it’s time for Plan B…

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass… it’s about learning how to dance in the rain.

— Unknown

I began writing this back on St.Paddy’s Day, a holiday that brings to mind my very Irish Mom who had a penchant for “sayings” that some might call clichés but I called them wee bits of wisdom.  This lament of hers comes to mind:

It’s the luck of the Irish…

Sometimes it was said with a long, loud SIGHHH and sometimes with a wicked, jolly and self-satisfied GRINNN… the ambiguity led me to believe that us Irish could count on both bad luck and good luck. No telling what would happen. But, for sure, it happened because Continue reading » Learning to Dance in the Rain

Hope

Touching the Walls on Both Sides

How do you live inside hope?

…if you’re lucky, you’ll find a way to live inside hope, running down its hallways touching the walls on both sides.

— Barbara Kingsolver

Puts me in mind of the time I learned to dance on a moving log…

Hope arouses a passion for the possible.

— William Sloan Coffin

There I was, arms flailing in a desperate attempt to stay upright on the suspended rough hewn pine log… consumed with the fear of falling… ready to give up almost before I’d begun… Continue reading » Touching the Walls on Both Sides

Keep On Dancing

Even when you don’t know the steps, give yourself permission to keep on dancing – your next move will reveal itself as you go…

Dance is your pulse, your heartbeat, your breathing. It’s the rhythm of your life. It’s the expression in time and movement, in happiness, joy, sadness and envy.

— Jaques D’ambroise

Pointes, Pirouettes, Pliés?

That would be a “no”… you won’t find Ellie posing at the ballet barre.  Not even in my mind’s eye.  Ballerina lessons weren’t part of my childhood – I was busy doing other stuff: mostly reading, with the occasional swimming (if I could find a pool), playing baseball (I was a catcher), climbing trees and wandering about the foothills.

I’m more like the kid in the photo that tops this post – I’m mentally movin’ and groovin’ with the beat… steppin’ into the unknown with Gwen Stefani’s music and title lyrics “Keep on Dancing” pulsing through my brain, propelling me forward into my challenges.  (The rest of Stefani’s lyrics?  Not my scene, but for rhythm, Stefani’s my groove!) Setting aside the beat, Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance” is my go-to song for Continue reading » Keep On Dancing

Objects in the Rearview Mirror…

Where do you look for next year’s resolutions?  Do you have a better idea?

And if life is just a highway, then the soul is just a car.  And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are…

— MeatLoaf

I find myself thinking about 2010 as a fresh new year, a clean slate on which to paint my best intentions.  I, like everyone else, want a happy and satisfying life and am willing to do the work it takes to make it so.

But as much as I long to embrace all that 2010 has to offer, this last year’s events weigh heavy on my heart – the death of my beloved husband looms-large in my rearview mirror.  And clouds my future-vision.  Still, I know it’s time for me to create a new vision – to fill-in the details of a new life – my new life – and to fill it with new purpose.

And I reluctantly conclude that Andy Warhol was right when he said:
