You can do it for yourself too!

Today I’m feeling smug.  I did something little but BIG just the same.

You see, the toilet broke.  And I fixed it.  Me.  All by myself.  No biggie. It was a simple part that broke and needed to be replaced. (LOL yet?)  As Elton John sings in Your Song: “I know it’s not much…”

Quite the contrary, it IS a BIG thing.  Upon seeing that the problem wouldn’t be solved by a simple jiggle of the handle, and that there was a broken part, I realized “Ain’t nobody here but you, so what are you going to do about it?”  Well, off to the store I went.  And once there, after much good discussion with the Home Depot Guy about the myriad of parts available, I bought the “right one” and headed home, got it installed and ta-da!  It’s fixed.  And I did it.  Me.  All by myself. Uh huh.

And if I could find a street parade, I’d gladly add it to my list of celebratory plans.  How about you?  What will you be up to?  Camping?  Heading out of town?  Sta-cationing again this year?  Barbecuing with family and friends?

I love reading the horoscopes in my local newspaper. Why? Not because I believe that my “sign” portends a certain future.  No.  Instead, I happen to find surprisingly insightful comments scattered among the various horoscopes for each day.  For instance, last month, one of the horoscopes for Aries (March 23-April 19) included this advice:
<blockquote>Find a reason to celebrate.</blockquote>
And, hey, I like that idea. Good advice. For today.  Or any day.  For me, for you and for anyone, born as an Aries or not. (I’m one of the “not-Aries”.)  I think that Mattie Stepanek, the brave youngster who faced adversity with poetry, explained more eloquently than I why celebration is good:
<blockquote>While we are living in the present, we must celebrate life every day, knowing that we are becoming history with every work, every action, every deed.</blockquote>
<h4>What Can You Celebrate Today?</h4>
What can you celebrate today, April 14th 2010???  Take a moment, think about your day, think about your life, think about what’s doin’… and what you have to celebrate, now, today.  Make your own list.  And then CELEBRATE!

When he took his daughter out of the tub, she ran in circles singing “<em>dee dah day, dee dah day</em>”, doing the dance she does when her joy is so big that she just can’t hold it in any more.  Being a goal oriented adult, he almost missed this joyful celebration by insisting that she hurry over so he could dry her off.  She stopped and, looking straight at him, asked the question every adult dreads, “<em>Why?</em>”  Upon reflection, he really couldn’t give her an answer.  He was just trying to get bath time finished.  He had nowhere to go.  Nothing he needed to do.
