Somehow, we need to shove 8 weeks of shopping, cooking, entertaining, partying and traveling all into the four weeks between the two holidays.

I suppose that there is some comfort in the hurley-burley of racing around and getting things done. It helps us to not notice that our nest is empty or our parents have gone. If we’re busy focused on the tasks, maybe we won’t ...Continue reading » Dang, It’s the Holidays!

There are moments that smack you in the face with their magnificence and my first glorious glimpse of the bright purple Morning Glories cascading over my neighbor’s stucco-ed wall, well, they WOW’d me!

Each morning as I embarked upon my “hill walk” challenge, I admired the beauties and noted their increasing abundance. And then I missed ...Continue reading » Morning Glories!

The only responsibilities I have are investing and writing posts for the blog. (WHAT, you take a vacation and don’t work??!!!) As part of pampering myself, I’m catching up on Charlie Rose. Five nights a week, Charlie invites someone interesting, or famous, or powerful or sometimes all three at once, to his table and has a conversation with them. The Social Animal by David Brooks had just been published and Brooks was doing his book tour. Hence, he was Charlie’s guest for the hour. (I don’t mean to be overly familiar but I’ve been watching Charlie for sooooo long that I figure I can call him by his first name.)

The Social Animal is fiction, based on ...Continue reading » Speaking Up for the Introvert

Even as I tried to talk myself out of it, I drove across town to see if the furniture I’d seen in the Craigslist.org ad might be something I’d like and could afford. And because of this side trip that I shouldn’t have been making, I had a serendipity encounter that I later realized was probably a ...Continue reading » Is Today the Day?

It’s the lazy days of summer and feeling a bit lazy myself, it’s taken me a little while to figure out that I’m not really going anywhere. I’m busy enough, but I’m not making progress. In fact, I feel way too busy and way too unproductive. ...Continue reading » Making Friendly Choices

Sometimes the challenge is invigorating and sometimes it is draining. When I was younger, I saw every challenge as an opportunity. I believed that if you were smart and worked hard, you would eventually prevail. I was lucky… and naïve.

I should have known better. My maternal grandmother died of breast cancer when my mother was 17. She had been sick for four years. Despite that history, it’s taken me 50-some years to learn that not everything can be fixed with hard work and smarts. ...Continue reading » Riding the Mood Coaster

The new normal is that work starts when you get up (if you’re lucky and no one is calling you from a distant time zone) and ends when you turn out the light for the night. The thing is, it’s not just happening to you, it is now an accepted part of our culture. That acceptance has huge ramifications for how we live our lives. We brag that we work 80 hours/week. Our kids brag about how many activities they’re involved in. No one stops until they drop – LITERALLY! ...Continue reading » The 24/7 Life
