Joy is not in things; it is in us.

Today, Wonder Dog (WD) and I walked to the local grocery store. We were going there because I have recently discovered Redbox (www.Redbox.com). If you’re not familiar with Redbox, it’s the magic machine in most local grocery stores that lets you rent a relatively recent movie for just $1.00. What a deal, when you go out to the website you can watch trailers and reserve a movie at a particular location. Then you go pick it up and it’s due by 9:00 the next evening or, horror of horrors, you owe them… another dollar. This I can afford.
But Redbox isn’t why I’m writing this post. I’m writing because I have discovered the secret of creation. I know this sounds a bit Continue reading » Joy to the World

The most useful piece of learning for the uses of life is to unlearn what is untrue.

Have you ever noticed how often we repeat ourselves? I’m not talking about retelling the same story over and over, though that can be annoying. I’m talking about reliving the same story over and over, (you know, the one), about being trapped in our own behaviors.
It happens to me all the time. I can be cruising along, doing just fine and the next thing you know, I’ve fallen in the hole in the sidewalk. You may know the hole I’m talking about. It’s wonderfully described by Portia Nelson in her poem, “There’s a Hole in my Sidewalk.”
Chapter 1.
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… Continue reading » Learn It Again, Sam

Who’s afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? Well, it seems we all are. In Love Beyond Reason, John Ortberg goes all the way back to the story of the Three Little Pigs to make a point. I know you remember the story, but just in case you want to watch the Disney version, you can see it here. Ortberg points out that every life has its Big Bad Wolves. No matter what we do, the Big Bad Wolf (BBW) comes to visit us many times throughout our lives. We never know what form he will take and there is no way to avoid him. In life, there are Big Bad Wolves and we need to deal with them. (Sometimes several of them gang up on us all at the same time — after all, wolves run in packs.)
What to Do About All That Huffing and Puffing
No matter what form the BBW takes, his focus is to huff and puff and blow your house down. The question is what have we done to Continue reading » Are You Ready for the Big Bad Wolf?

Tell us about your “success triggers”. What are some of your chained behavior patterns that sweep you from “getting started” to “into-it” project completion?
Who me? Procrastinate? Nah.
Why is it that sometimes I just find myself stuck avoiding a project and other times I find myself mid-project before I even know I’ve started? What’s behind procrastination and what can we do to short-circuit it?
I have several important and urgent things I need to do. (To understand the distinction between important and urgent, see: Yuni library – Urgent vs Important) And apparently they are things I really don’t want to do. Because here I am up since 5AM and now it’s 3PM, and I’ve found oh-so-many other things to do during that time. And I’ve not even started on the important/urgent gotta-do things. What’s going on?
