These kids make every thing look so easy

More About “Looks Easy”

The kid on the board makes it look so EASY.  I want more of that for myself… how about you?

There seems to be some perverse human characteristic that likes to make easy things difficult.

— Warren Buffett

My post last week celebrated a really mundane personal accomplishment. And while I respect my exuberant and frivolous rejoicing (regardless of how silly it makes me feel) I also feel confused… I find myself asking: If I were to just adopt a more casual, laissez-faire attitude, would that make everything easier?

I like to think of myself as an optimist who prepares for possibilities.  But I’m wondering if my creative optimism is still serving me well? Or have I inadvertently morphed into a pessimist?  Should I shift drastically, adapt some, or just carry on as if nothing needs adjustment?

As I think about the kid’s ease on the surfboard and about my friend JD’s ease at doing his thing, I wonder: Is it really as easy as they make it look or have they simply practiced past Continue reading » More About “Looks Easy”

Those that say you can’t take it with you never saw a car packed for a vacation trip.

— Unknown

I grew up in Chicago.  My parents wanted to live in a warm climate – Chicago can be a bit cold, and gray and wet and smoggy.  When it’s not cold and gray and wet and smoggy, it’s hot and sunny and humid and smoggy.  Both of my parents had grown up in Chicago and they both longed for a cleaner, more hospitable place to live.  Since we couldn’t live anywhere else, every summer we took a three week driving vacation to the Left Coast – though back then it was just the west coast.

My parents must have been nuts: three weeks in a car with three little kids.  OY!  To make sure that we all returned home in one piece and NOT in a casket, Mom made sure that we had lots of toys to entertain us during the 8-10 hour days as we went across Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.  Because she also believed that our education shouldn’t stop during the summer, she also brought library books for us to read at night.  After all, everyone knows you get sick if you Continue reading » Scenic Outlook Ahead

Is Weisure Time a Good Thing?

Is weisure time a blessing or a curse for you???

I had a weisurely weekend… “What,” you ask, “is weisure?”  It’s blending work with leisure, leisure with work. Work + Leisure = Weisure. Is it a good thing?  Maybe, maybe not.

Weisure makes a value judgment and comes across as critical of the way in which many western men and women live ‘lesser’ lives because of its instant and in-touch nature.  I see the experience as enriching and don’t bemoan the passing of the ‘old’ way of life, since there is no reason why the two cannot co-exist.

Life is a Balancing Act

Have you ever felt off-balance?

You’ll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You’ll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left.

— Dr. Seuss
from Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Have you ever felt off-balance?  I have. Sometimes I feel just a little out of kilter.  And, sometimes I’m tilting every which way. Like the tires on my car, my life seems to need a bit of adjustment every now and then… a subtle shift of weight.  The challenge is to find that sweet spot where all things return to even keel – lean to the left, lean to the right, stand up, sit down, fight, fight, fight – and then, ta-da! Balance is restored!  (Momentarily at least.) Continue reading » Life is a Balancing Act

It’s always your next move.

— Napoleon Hill

Do you know what you believe and do your beliefs empower you?  We may think we know what we believe but over time our beliefs change.  We can be so busy that we don’t notice and  unconscious beliefs can be the most helpful/hurtful beliefs that we hold.

For me, I find that I can be a great cheerleader for other people, because I see the possibilities in other people more easily than I see them in myself.  AND I believe that other people can achieve, while being not so sure about what I can achieve.

Lately I’ve been suffering from writer’s block.  For me writer’s block doesn’t mean that there’s nothing out there to write about.  Rather, it means that there’s nothing that I want to write about.  The problem is that after a while, I begin to believe that the writing drought is reality – forever.  As a result, I Continue reading » Protect Yourself
