Wacky Wednesday #43 – How’d They Do That?

It was suggested that Wacky Wednesday has been spending too much time on “whimsy” and “cute”, and too little time on “wacky”.  “Cute”, it was pointed out, isn’t even in the mission statement.

Well how about this for wacky: what if you could enter any sentence you wanted into a website and have it speak it back to you, as either a man or woman, in various languages and international accents.  What, that’s not wacky enough?  Okay, how about if you could change the pitch, or give it effects like whispering or using a bullhorn?  There, now that’s seriously wacky, right?

The first thing you may notice is that “Julie” from the U.S. looks a lot like “Elizabeth” from the U.K. (and “Tessa” from South Africa).  And “Javier” from Mexico really looks more like a “Simon” from the U.K.  But what’s really strange is how the guys (should that be singular?) use a human picture, and the women are a cartoon drawing.  Did they blow the budget on the male model, or was there no woman willing to be used in a way such as this?  You’ll see what we mean when you move the mouse pointer over the picture and the head and eyes try to follow it like a cat chasing a laser pointer.  Inquiring minds want to know.

Oh, and take care using the “whisper” effect; we can’t decide if it’s interesting or just creepy, like a horror movie off-camera voice telling the heroine not to worry, just walk through the door into the dark room…
