There is Never enough Time

May You Have Enough…

I run out of day before I run out of To-Do’s – how about you?

Back in June I saved a Family Circus cartoon that made me smile.  Cuddled in her Father’s arms, nightgown-clad little Dolly, tells him:

Mommy says it’s bedtime… but I wasn’t through with today yet.

That pretty much describes my day: it’s late evening but there’s still so much left on my To-Do list – leftovers I ambitiously thought I’d have finished by now.  Much like little Dolly, I’m just not through with today yet.  Instead I’m scrambling to figure out what (if anything) is a “must do before you go to bed” and which are “oh well’s”.

Oh! Do not attack me with your watch. A watch is always too fast or too slow. I cannot be dictated to by a watch.

— Jane Austen
Mansfield Park

Here’s what I’ve decided: as soon as I finish this post I will call it “enough” – what I’ve gotten done today will have to do.

Time is a train
Makes the future the past
Leaves you standing in the station
Your face pressed up against the glass.

— U2
Zoo Station

Face pressed against the glass, I will rejoice in the accomplishments of today and call it a day well spent. Tomorrow’s another day, a day with its own To-Do list.  A new day when I will, once again, do as much as I can.  And count my blessings as I go…

Looking Forward

As I once again wrap my brain around the old saying “Enough is enough”, its lessons teach me anew.  And so, even though I may be getting a little ahead of the calendar here – which is better than the calendar getting a little ahead of me – in the spirit of next week’s Thanksgiving holiday, I offer you this Old Irish Blessing:

May you have:
Enough happiness to keep you sweet.
Enough trials to keep you strong.
Enough sorrows to keep you human.
Enough hope to keep you happy.
Enough failure to keep you humble.
Enough success to keep you eager.
Enough friends to give you comfort.
Enough faith and courage in yourself to banish sadness.
Enough wealth to meet your needs.

And one thing more:
Enough determination to make each day
a more wonderful day than the day before.

May your days be long and your To-Do lists short!
