As you begin your day, what will make it a “successful” day?
Spend the afternoon. You can’t take it with you.
— Annie Dillard
I went to my Zumba® exercise class this morning. Only there was no Zumba® exercise class this morning. And I knew that but it “slipped my mind”…
And, just as I was about to tilt into snafu, well, I chose to laugh at myself (once again) and realized that, class or no class, going to my non-existent Zumba® exercise class this morning got me out of bed and into my day: I’d gotten my walk done early (before class) and had time to go to the library and complete some research I needed to do… I’d gotten my momentum going. And as PattiAnn reminded us in The Trend Is Your Friend, momentum can be a good thing IF we’re moving in a desired direction:
Just as a body at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force, a body moving in a particular direction will tend to continue in that direction unless acted upon by an outside force.
Class or no class, I’d gotten the momentum going in a good direction. And I kept the good direction going despite the snag; I was off to a bad-start-made-good. I found myself humming the show tune Seize the Day:
- Open the gates and seize the day
- Don’t be afraid and don’t delay
- Nothing can break us
- No one can make us
- Give our rights away
- Arise and seize the day
No One Can Make Us
No one can make us stay with a day going bad. We can choose another path. When things go bad, and they often will, we have a chance to choose how the rest of the day will go. We can get angry and frustrated and run around in circles screaming “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.” Or, we can look for ways to save the day, to turn the energy of our momentum toward more productive and positive directions.
And, as long as you’re at it, lead with exuberance!
We’re fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance.
