Just do what must be done. This may not be happiness, but it is greatness.
— George Bernard Shaw
Halderol, Depakote, Aricept, Lexapro – these are the new words that I’m learning these days. Never did I think that I would be increasing my vocabulary so quickly. Welcome to the wonderful world of pharmaceutical mood enhancement.
To be fair, I had heard of all these drugs before because my friend May has a son who is bipolar and these drugs had been prescribed for him as they were trying to help him with his OCD and bipolar disorder. The thing is, I had never really understood what each one did – I didn’t need to.
What has caused my newfound knowledge of all these meds is that my father went on a 4-day Continue reading » Doing What Must Be Done

- Sometimes our hearts get tangled
- And our souls a little off-kilter
- Friends and family can set us right
- And help guide us back to the light.

If you’ve been reading here lately, you probably know that my nuclear family (and nuclear is exactly the right term) has been facing a bit of a crisis. By nuclear I mean me, my siblings and my father. There’s nothing quite like a dance with dementia to get the juices flowing.
As you may recall, the Friday before Christmas Dad chose to drive the wrong way down a divided highway. This resulted in a short hospital stay, a tentative diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and a statement by the medical personnel involved that it was no longer safe for Dad to live alone. The advantage/disadvantage of Alzheimer’s is that Dad doesn’t Continue reading » Bouncing Back Through Family and Friends

Do you have a favorite mirror – one that lets you see yourself in your best light?
Laugh at yourself, but don’t ever aim your doubt at yourself. Be bold. When you embark for strange places, don’t leave any of yourself safely on shore. Have the nerve to go into unexplored territory.
— Alan Alda
My last several posts led me to the startling revelation: I’ve been harboring a very BIG doubt. I’d conjured up a dreamscape with me cast as the captain of a sinking ship. Since then I’ve been boldly sha-booming (Life is like a dream, sha-boom, sha-boom) into this unexplored territory… and, I find myself suddenly weary, tired if you will, of all this introspection. I’m tired of thinking about me, myself and I.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
All this self-examination reminds me of a time when, getting ready for work, I glimpsed myself in the mirror, and groused:
Ellie, what a frump you are!
Later, I stopped at the cleaners where I happened to glance into their full length mirror… and realized:
Wow, I look terrific!
And that revelation changed my entire outlook. Which then made me wonder, how could I have thought myself “frumpy” a few hours ago when now I looked like WOW-ser???

Illness is the most heeded of doctors: to goodness and wisdom we only make promises, pain we obey.
— Marcel Proust
This morning I woke up at 3:45. This was not because I was so enthused I couldn’t wait to take on the day, it was because I was having a yucky coughing fit. My next door neighbors, who if it was worth the effort should be committed, get up every workday morning at about this time. Even the husband who has been retired for 18 months gets up at 4:00ish. To stay busy and fund his golf habit, he has a job at Macy’s helping people in the men’s department. Although he regularly volunteers for the early shift, they seem to mostly give him the 6:30 to 9:30 (closing) shift. Since his preference is to eat dinner early and go to bed around 7:00 – 7:30, this is the height of brilliance in making the most of your employees. Being a really nice guy, despite this weird fetish for early morning, he often puzzles over the ways of management. (I would probably just swear. I’m not nearly as “nice.”)
The good news is that because I was up so early, I was able to look at my investments and decide that since the pre-market was so strong in one of my positions I would put in an order “just in case.” Translated this means Continue reading » What To Do When You Feel Crummy

What life-lessons have you discovered out of past “mistakes”?
As long as the world is turning and spinning, we’re gonna be dizzy and we’re gonna make mistakes.
— Mel Brooks
Dizzy or Ditzy?
I’m dizzy, dizzy, dizzy with all the stupid little mistakes that I keep perpetuating – misplaced (or lost) keys, cell, hands-free device, chargers, paperwork, passwords, …la-la-la …you name it, I’ve misplaced it in the not too distant past. These “missing items” prey upon my brain, reminding me:
It has to be here somewhere, find it, find it, find it.
(Almost as mind-bending as the messages emanating from that last piece of fudge in the pantry…)
I used to brag that I “might look unorganized but I can get my hands on ‘whatever’ in minutes, it’s a visual system that works for me.” Well that was then, this is my new now – a disorganized mindscape.
And I’ve been bashing myself with post-mortems on all my many mistakes… How could I have not paid attention to where I put that? Why didn’t I put it in a safer place – more convenient, more consistent, yada yada??? I don’t remember ever being quite this ditzy.
Then again, my world is spinning – yeah, like that excuse is gonna fly. Uh-uh, not a chance. Back in July I posted Spinning into Control in which I wrote:
