It is not always what we know or analyzed before we make a decision that makes it a great decision. It is what we do after we make the decision to implement and execute it that makes it a good decision.

— William Pollard

Back when I was working in Corporate America managing the installation of large computer systems, it was very important that everything be done correctly.  When a computer was ordered, it wasn’t delivered like today’s PCs are, it arrived in pieces and needed to be assembled.  Elaborate plans needed to be made to assemble the equipment, install the operating system (think Windows) and migrate the data.

These machines were so physically large that it was sometimes necessary to plan a route from the delivery truck into the machine room.  Because of the complexity of the process and the number of people from different organizations that needed to be involved, we had a process called “Systems Assurance.”  There were two purposes to the Systems Assurance meeting; ensure that nothing Continue reading » Still on Target Using Creative Optimism

Life is a sum of all your choices.

— Albert Camus

Malibu (the kitten) has one major goal in life – to get onto my desk.  Although he will give you the impression that he is interested in other things, in reality he is focused like a laser on my desk.  I’m not sure what the attraction is, maybe it’s just that each time he gets there, someone removes him, but whatever it is, he is determined.

Because he is so determined, no matter what he is doing, IF I walk away from my desk for a moment and don’t move my chair away from the desk, he will leave whatever he is playing with and within seconds, he will Continue reading » Still Heading for the Target

Creative Optimism – Preparing for What Can Go Wrong

Duck amuck

How do you stay flexible enough to accomplish your goals even when so many things could go wrong???

Have you ever felt that the bulk of your life amounted to doing your best to make your ‘Plan B’ work, despite recurrent longings to somehow get back to working from a Plan A?  I know the price of success: dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.

— Frank Lloyd Wright

Surely you’ve been there yourself.  You had a plan.  You knew what you were doing.  You knew where you were going and how you were going to get there.  You had all your ducks lined up.  And then Wham! The “fit hits the shan!”  And all bets are off.  Or not.

Choosing Life

No one ever finds life worth living – one has to make it worth living.

A friend of mine is stuck.  She has broken up with her partner but because he is working an hour’s plane ride away, she is waiting for him to return and get his things.  Because two of those things are his cats, she feels that she can’t give notice on her apartment because no pets are allowed.  She wants the cats out of there so that if the landlord wants to come and meet with her, there won’t be a problem because of the cats.  Since she doesn’t know when he will come back, she can’t move forward and give notice.

Added to the general pain of the breakup, she is very attached to the cats and she is really going to miss them.   She is in a lot of pain waiting for this to come to an end.  She can’t keep him just for the cats and she can’t move on.  She is truly stuck.

Ellie has been forced into a situation that she didn’t choose and can’t change.  As we’ve watched Ellie move through her grief, one thing is abundantly clear Continue reading » Choosing Life

Having Fun is Essential to Resistance

Malibu ready to pounce

If it’s not fun, you’re not doing it right.

— Bob Basso

Boy, have we been having fun!  Malibu, the new kitten, put on 9 ounces in the week between vet visits.  Considering that when we weighed him the first time he was 1 pound 5 ounces, that’s an amazing 43% weight gain – the healthy kind.  He has been here about two weeks and he is the most spoiled kitty I’ve ever seen – and, trust me, I’ve seen some SPOILED kitties.

Every morning, after my prayerful meditation, I go into my office (also known as Malibu’s room) and before I even get to his crate, he is purring.  What a wonderful way to start the day!  He is so happy to see me!  To be honest, this is because Continue reading » Having Fun is Essential to Resistance
