Still Living With Uncertainty

Slightly confusing signs

Well, the big trip is over.  I have gone to visit my father and nothing is changing.  Not that Dad hasn’t changed, he has.  Just that not enough has changed in the underlying situation to allow us to make any decisions about the best way to proceed.

For as long as I’ve known him, Dad has had a temper.  His response to unexpected circumstances was to rage.  If you happened to be close by, you became the target.  He was never physically violent that I am aware of, but then he is a little guy – under five feet, wirey and muscular but at a distinct disadvantage when it came to taking on most of the world.

Can We See Our Way Through to Better Times?

Have you ever put on someone’s prescription glasses and suddenly gone dizzy?  Well I would suggest that’s how many of us are looking into the future – with lenses prescribed for the past.  And those glasses are making us feel disoriented.  There’s a mismatch between what we expect/want to see and what we actually see before us now.

So Many Trials & Tribulations

My niece recently wrote on Facebook, “Cancer sucks”.  And even though she hadn’t said it, most of our family thought “uh oh” and accurately assumed the worst – someone else in the family had just been diagnosed with cancer.  Another someone has begun the arduous and prayerful journey of hope and courage, fighting for his life.

How can you streeeetch to become more flexible?

Once he’s out in the wild, he gets caught up in the wonder of nature and records it at the rate of many frames per second. Then, he chooses which pictures of the many hundreds he took are suitable for publishing.

Kick Up Your Heels and Celebrate

As I meandered through this week of annoyingly half-finished tasks, keenly concentrating on celebrating small wins, I stumbled upon a delightful and off-the-wall blog site run by Torley who tells us he’s “a happy human being.”  About “micro-wins” he happily recommends:

Throughout our lives we are confronted with situations that we just need to get through.  Things that are out of our control, and that can only be resolved with the passage of time, can make us feel anxious.  In my case, it’s my father’s rapidly worsening dementia.

Dealing With Dementia

Dementia is a difficult condition for both the patient and the caregiver.  For some period of time, the person with dementia is not really capable of taking care of themselves, but also won’t allow you to take care of them.  You are in a position of “damned if you do and damned if you don’t”: concerned about their safety while trying to facilitate their autonomy.

Take a short break and consider the following:

“The true test of character is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do.”
