Momma Said There’d Be Days Like This

I got the blahsToday is one of THOSE days. For some reason I woke up in the pits. No reason, just a low day and no sign of sun. Since like everyone else I need to get “stuff” done today, I tried to diagnose the problem. The best I could come up with was a yucky case of the blahs!! I get those when we’ve had too many days of “June Gloom” and today is REALLY gloomy. There’s a slim chance of rain today, but odds are, it’ll just be gray – like ME! Given a choice, what I’d love to do is curl up under a blankie with a book and my faithful dog to keep me warm. If the dog ain’t so faithful, I can fall back to the cat. But today is a work day, so no such luck. What to do…

The Power of Suggestion

Donut on plateToday I bought donuts. To set the record straight, I don’t know when I last ate a donut. (Before this morning, that is.) I KNOW they’re pure sugar and fat. I know they’re bad for me. I know, I know. And I usually don’t – eat – donuts! Yet, while I was out running errands this morning, my car just up and drove me to the best donut shop in town. What could I do? I was driven to buy donuts.

The 24/7 Life

Time RunningIt’s no news to you, life is moving faster and faster every day. The new normal is that work starts when you get up (if you’re lucky and no one is calling you from a distant time zone) and ends when you turn out the light for the night. The thing is, it’s not just happening to you, it is now an accepted part of our culture. That acceptance has huge ramifications for how we live our lives. We brag that we work 80 hours/week. Our kids brag about how many activities they’re involved in. No one stops until they drop – LITERALLY!

What Goes ’Round Comes AroundPerhaps you’ve heard that one of the most influential factors in resilience and mood management is self-talk. According to Martin Seligman, author of Learned Optimism, self-talk – the internal monologue going ’round in our heads – is how we make sense of our world; it’s how we explain what’s happening. And our explanations are often, by habit, pessimistic or optimistic. And that gets me to wondering about all those family clichés we heard growing up. Take my Irish/German Mother’s answers to almost every crisis:

No news is good news
It’s the luck of the Irish
You’ll be well before you’re married
What goes around comes around
Knock wood

As a kid I used to ponder over each of these sayings, wondering, what does that MEAN? Continue reading » What Goes ‘Round Comes Around: Self-Talk and Family Clichés

Why Resilience?

Fall RiskHave you noticed how people are much more interested in finding ways to cope than they used to be? There seems to be a public acknowledgement that times are tough. As a culture, we all are more aware of the troubles of our “neighbors.” Part of this is the 24-hour news cycle which must be fed constantly, so there are more stories about the effects of the economic crisis, swine flu, etc. Part of it is that we are more in contact with people all over the country thru email, Skype, Facebook, etc, than we ever were before. We “know” more people and their stories.

At Book Club last night I heard about a family in Michigan. One of our Book Club members mentioned that she was talking to a software support person, someone she works with regularly. He told her that his wife and her family members (father, brothers, sisters) had ALL been laid off from one of the Big Three automakers. With only him still working, their family’s unemployment rate was about 80%. Continue reading » Why Resilience?
